The Making a Murderer Hype

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, from your newsfeed, radio, TV, friends, colleagues, people at the doctor’s office, random people you walk past — they’re all talking about it. It’s everywhere. Making a Murderer. Have you watched it? I have and as I’m a huge fan of binge watching series, I was able to take those 10 episodes out in a reasonable amount of time {i.e. 2.5 days}. Netflix is a genius. This is brilliant for them. It’s all people are talking about, and now we’re begging them for a second season.

Side note for binge watching series. This is genius. Whoever invented the binge watch should be rich. Except I think I invented it because I remember laying on my parents’ couch binge watching Full House, Saved by the Bell, and Boy Meets World re-runs back in the day. Binge watching is what TV should be. Sure I enjoy current shows as well, but the suspense of watching an ongoing series is BRUTAL. How am I supposed to wait until next week to know if they’re going to get together? If that person will be okay. Or who the bad guy really is. Or even just continue the humor in a light-hearted comedy. Binge watching fixes it all for me. I can get all my answers by just watching.

Maybe it’s all part of that “we want it and want it now” mentality that we Americans tend to have. Guilty. Also binge watching isn’t what it used to be pre-kids. In those days I could literally spend a weekend camping out on a show. These days, if I stay up late I can get two or three episodes in before I fall asleep and then wake up the next morning wishing I had cleaned up the house or just gone to sleep instead of wasting time watching TV. Until that very night when I decide to stay up late and watch four episodes and the cycle continues.

So back to Making a Murderer. I have so many questions and thoughts, and I wish I could have a live chat with each of you to share my thoughts and hear yours. It’s riveting. How is it so riveting? Is Steven Avery’s mom your favorite person in the series, too? Who do you think did it? These are just some of the questions I would throw your way. The more I ponder this show, this reality for all of the people in it, the more I wonder why this enthralls me, and so many others, so much. I don’t know the answer to that, but I do have a couple of theories.

Maybe because life overall is hard. We’re pushed, we’re needed, we’re busy so much. Sitting and binge watching a series is a chance to zone out. It’s a break. I think this particular series is so captivating because it challenges what we know to be true — our justice system, morals, and faith in others. It’s so hard to know who is telling the truth and who is lying, especially as more and more comes out about the documentary and people voice “the true story.” And it’s perplexing. All of it.

Have you watched it? What are your thoughts?

If you haven’t, go check it out. Now.

  1. I can’t decide if he did it or not. I keep going back and forth. Based on what we saw in the documentary, I don’t know if there was enough evidence to convict Steven Avery of Teresa Halbach’s murder. I also think there were some terrible misdoings by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department, the media covering the case, that pervy prosecutor, Brendan’s first lawyer, and his slimy investigator that made him draw the pictures. I do think Brendan is innocent. At age 16, I don’t think he had the mental capacity to understand 1) what was going on at all and 2) what his first lawyer was trying to get him to agree to with the plea deal.

I will say this, though. If Steven Avery were guilty, would be really be going through all that trouble to learn the law and learn how to appeal his own case while in prison? This is why I think he’s not guilty. But then I go back and have a hard time believing that the sheriff’s department murdered Teresa to frame him. This is why I think he could be guilty.

To sum it up, I don’t know what happened. But like you, I was riveted with the series and couldn’t wait to catch the next episode.

  2. LAUREN! I watched it after reading this blog, and I just finished it yesterday. OMG. I went back and forth then entire time over guilty or not. I LOVE his precious mother! And I feel so sorry for his nephew-who I totally believe is completely innocent in all of it. I really struggle with blaming the police for Teresa’s murder, but I also find it hard to believe Steven had anything to do with it. I was warned not to google it until I had watched, that a lot was left out of the documentary because they want us to believe he is innocent. So when I have time, I plan to fuel the guilty pleasure fire with the Internet’s take on Making a Murder. Thank you for your post, and for inspiring me to binge watch more often!
