Maya’s 1st Visit to the Dentist

0

Do you ever wonder what will happen when you take your child to the dentist for the first time? As moms, we know you like to be able to talk to your child about what they can expect before you arrive. With that in mind, we want to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what happens during a new patient appointment at Children’s Dentistry of Knoxville.

Today was Maya’s very first visit with Dr. Darryl. She and her mom, Claire, were nice enough to let us tell you all about their visit.

When they arrive, they meet Ms. Marina and get all checked in. Because this is Maya’s first visit she gets a new t-shirt that’s just her size!

After checking in, Maya and Claire head straight to the playroom to check out the toys and books. Mom already completed all the paperwork online from home, so they can play before the appointment starts!

On the way back to the clinical area, Maya really liked seeing our big tree and ladybug lights!

In the exam room, Mrs. Alisha shows Maya that she has a special, kid-friendly, tickly toothbrush to brush her teeth. She also talks to Maya about how to brush her own teeth at home and how Mom can help her take care of her teeth!

Wearing sunglasses at the dentist?!? Wearing a pair of shades is great! That way, Maya can watch TV while she has her teeth cleaned.

Maya is 3 years old, so it’s time to try to get some digital x-rays of her teeth. These x-rays are very important because Dr Darryl can only see 3 of the 5 surfaces of each tooth (60%) with his eyes when he looks in Maya’s mouth. X-rays show areas between the teeth, so we can be sure they are healthy and strong all over.

Can we just say how much we love Maya’s Emmy & Edie headband!?!

Now it’s time for Dr Darryl’s exam! He wants to look in Maya’s mouth and count her teeth. During this exam, he’s also checking her growth and development and the health of her gums and tongue, along with the condition of enamel and checking for any potential areas of concern. Mom is there to hold Maya’s hand throughout the exam and everything is quick and easy.

Maya has learned so much about brushing that she’s showing Ally Alligator how it’s done!

Maya has been such a great patient! She’s taking home a new toothbrush and she’s earned a special token to use in the Treasure Tower for a prize before she goes home!

Special thanks to Maya and Claire for letting us share their experience!
