Just the Girls

I grew up in a house full of girls, where I was the youngest of three. Our house was full of bras, tampons, and every flavor of Lip Smacker lip gloss. My poor dad never got the boy to carry on the family name, but he got three girls who provided love, laughs, and plenty of face-palm moments. I don’t think he would have wanted it any other way.

 When my husband and I decided to start growing our family almost five years ago, I secretly wished for a sweet little girl. I knew the kind of mom I hoped to be and I knew I wanted to have a daughter. I wanted to do the girly things I was never into as a kid, like painted nails and twirly dresses, but I also wanted to also teach her to be tough and athletic like I was.

My wishes were granted and I got a girl who is full of sparkles and glitter, but also holds bugs and plays sports. She is sweet, and fun, and tough.

After my daughter was born I knew I wanted to give her the best gift I ever received: I wanted to give her a sister.

My sister is the first person I call with good news. She’s the first person I call with bad news. She’s my rock, my best friend. She’s the one I can be completely honest with and she reciprocates the honesty I need to hear.

She has seen me at my worst and she’s been beside me at my best.

My sister is my person.

The bond between sisters is unbreakable. No matter what happens or what comes between us, we rise up and realize the love we have for each other doesn’t wane. We have walked our paths together and get each other like no one else can. We may be vastly different, but we are all very much the same.

Last fall, I was able to give my oldest a little sister.

It eases my mind knowing they will always have each other. They will always have someone to cry with, to laugh with, and to talk to. They will have each other to love. They will always have someone rooting for them. They will have someone to complain to about how embarrassing their dad is or how annoying their mom is. They will create childhood memories that they can reminisce about as they get older. As friends will come and go, they will always have a forever friend in each other.

I am a Knoxville transplant from northern grounds, but I can't imagine being anywhere else. My blue blood has strangely become orange and I get chills when I hear Rocky Top. I became all things mom in 2013 and it's crazy to think how much life has changed. I love temper tantrums, watching Toy Story over and over, and making food that doesn't get eaten. Welcome to the Toddler Years. When I'm not doing that, you can find me running, reading, shopping, or taking pictures {check out Adara Photography!}
