Hard Parenting Truths

In a game of truth or dare, I’ll always pick truth. Here goes nothing on truths about parenting:

  • You can either run a house or play with your kids

  • I have a favorite kid (it changes daily)

  • Your kids have a favorite parent (it probably doesn’t change)

  • I say “hurry up,” “wait a minute” and “in just a second” more times than I can count each day

  • Your life will revolve around your kids, no matter how hard you try to “fit them in” to the life you already have

  • You will be jealous of the social lives of your non-kid friends

  • Date night will probably end with you going to Target, because you can shop faster with no kids

  • Some days you will wish you didn’t have kids

  • You will question the name you gave your kid

  • You’ll “accidentally” forget to brush the kid’s teeth, just so you can get bedtime done faster

  • Whatever rules you’ve come up with will be hard to enforce

  • Some days you’ll want to be a friend instead of a parent

  • You will spend most of your dates calculating how much the sitter cost

  • My oldest just wrote his name in the dust on our bathroom mirror

  • You will always feel like you are failing at something

  • You’ll agree to lay down with your kid at bedtime, just so you can get a nap

  • Some days the TV, iPad, phone ARE the best babysitter

  • You may go years before realizing what the tabs inside toddler shorts are for

  • I had to scrub my kids’ toes with a toothbrush in the bath after an outdoor weekend. Then I found the youngest brushing his teeth with the same brush.

  • Some days you can’t wait to get the kids out the door to school, and then you miss them when they’re gone

  • Putting sunscreen on is the worst

  • You will miss at least 1/5 of the medication doses you are supposed to give over the course of a week

  • You will hug and kiss and tell your kids you love them more than you will your partner

  • There will be things you don’t understand until you do, and then you’ll feel stupid

  • The days are long but the years are short

  • Despite the above, you would do it all over again in a heartbeat

What would you add to the list? Getting it off your chest will feel good!
