Is My Child Ready for Kindergarten?

0

As your child quickly approaches school age, you may be wondering if he or she has developed the skills necessary to be successful in this new and challenging part of their childhood.

In order to help your child with the transition, The Episcopal School of Knoxville has provided the following list of behaviors that educators consistently look for to assess a child’s readiness for the school experience.

  • Follows simple rules and directions
  • Recognizes authority
  • Listens to a story
  • Talks in sentences
  • Manages bathroom needs and dresses themselves
  • Recognizes shapes and sort objects by color, size and shape
  • Counts to ten
  • Uses scissors, crayons and a pencils correctly
  • Knows basic colors
  • Points to and identifies body parts such as elbow, knees, hips and shoulders.

What can I do to help prepare my child for kindergarten?

  • Join the library reading program.
  • Read with your child at least 15 minutes per day.
  • Help your child start a summer journal. You can write down the events and have your child illustrate them.
  • When shopping, focus on a letter of the day and have your child help find items that begin with that letter.
  • Sort socks, hair ribbons, dresses, shorts, etc. by color.
  • Establish a writing station. Provide crayons, pencils, paper and scissors.
  • Play outside, ride a bike, hula hoop, hop scotch, swing and climbing.

ESK will host two admissions events in the month of January. Both Tuesday, January 9, and Wednesday, January 17,  from 8am to 5pm will be “All Day ESK” admissions open houses. These all-day events are a great chance for current families and prospective families alike to get a peek at what ESK is like during a normal school day.
