What a great way to start out the season and the week with a UT victory! We’re all things orange this week, and we’re happy to share with you Smokey Tails a book written by John Lacey for little UT Vols fans.
Smokey the hound dog takes you on a journey through the Southeastern Jungle where he encounters a grumpy bulldog named Old George, a tricky elephant named Eli-Bamie, and the scary gator known as Mr. Chomper, on his search for the golden bone.
The book is a fun way for kids to enjoy the rivalries of the SEC while gong on an adventure with Smokey. The illustrations are eye-catching and will definitely keep your child’s attention as Smokey encounters each animal on his journey for the golden bone.
A little more about John, the local author.
“I have always enjoyed creative writing. It was my favorite subject all through my school days. I even majored in advertising at UT because in that field I had a chance to continue creative storytelling.
I had the idea for Smokey Tails when I was a senior at UT (2002). I wrote down the general plot and a few lines. I even sketched out a few characters. And then, I shelved it. I didn’t put any work into it for years.
It wasn’t until my wife and I had our first child, my daughter Campbell, that I resurrected Smokey Tails. When I would read her stories, I would just think to myself: ‘I can write stuff like this (which naively, I thought writing for children would be easy – I was wrong).’ So I pulled out the ole journal and started working on the story.
I consulted with a bunch of folks, hired an editor, and fine-tuned (cut out about 80 – 90% of the original content) the story. When I knew it was in a good place I put out an ad for an illustrator in Knoxville. Adam (who was living in Oregon at the time) found my post and sent me a few samples of his work. The rest is history!
There are a few children’s books out there about Smokey. But Smokey Tails is really the only one that I have seen that is a true adventure story. It has a plot, danger and heroic ending that I think any child or adult would enjoy.”
