Knoxville Doctor Develops New Technology to Improve Patient Experience

Sitting in a hospital room after her son’s emergency surgery for a broken arm, the last thing Bonnie Barclay wanted to think about was trying to make a follow-up appointment at the doctor’s office. But then her son’s surgeon, Dr. Jay Crawford, told Barclay about Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic’s new mobile appointment app.

“I didn’t have to wait on hold or even call the office. I was able to concentrate on taking care of my child,” Barclay says. “It made a very stressful situation a little less stressful.”

Dr. Crawford, himself a busy father of three, developed the app so that patients of all ages can communicate with KOC anytime, anywhere.

“Our patients seem to love the convenience of the new app. It saves them time and helps them get the appointment they need as soon as possible,” says Dr. Crawford, a pediatric and adolescent specialist.

KOC App

Patients can request an appointment at KOCortho.com, download the Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic app, or simply text KOC Now to 61234 from their smartphone. After they answer a few questions, KOC calls the patient ASAP.

“When I had time later that night, I was able to use my cell phone to enter all the information about why my son needed an appointment, what doctor he needed to see, and when,” Barclay says. “The KOC appointment staff called me as soon as they opened the next morning. They already had all of our information in their system, so I only had to spend a few minutes on the phone. It was such a relief.”

KOC Appointment App

After just four weeks in a cast and another month of rehabilitation, Barclay is thrilled her son is back to the competitive swimming he loves. She and Dr. Crawford encourage other patients to try the app and find out for themselves how easy it is.

“Anyone can use the KOC appointment app, not just parents. We have 33 physicians who specialize in everything from sports medicine treatment of athletes to joint replacement for older adults,” Dr. Crawford says. “And you can use the app to make an appointment at any of our four locations.”

Knoxville Orthopaedic Clinic is dedicated to staying on the cutting edge of any technology that helps patients, whether in the operating room or on their mobile devices.

For over 60 years, KOC has emphasized a unique practice of specialty orthopaedics. This means that our physicians have each received advanced training in a very specific part of the body or area of orthopaedics and continue to accumulate years of intensive study within this specialty. Over 20 years ago, I moved to Knoxville and fell in love with the city that has now truly become my home. Shortly after moving here, I married my college sweetheart, and when not working we set out to travel as much as we could. After working as a financial manager for six years, I welcomed my first son in 2010 and began a journey as a stay-at-home mom. Two years later we added another baby boy to make us a family of four. In June 2016, we welcomed our third son. I founded Knoxville Moms in November 2013 which began my career as a work-from-home mom, and it grew to the expansion of Chattanooga Moms in March 2016. We welcomed our first girl in November 2017 making us a family of six and adding a little pink in our house. In June 2021, I became the co-owner of the Atlanta Mom website, and in March 2022 I became the owner of the Nashville Moms parenting website. When I'm not carpooling the kids to sports and activities, you can find me enjoying a cup of coffee, reading a good book, and dreaming about my toes in the sand. I enjoy meeting new people and enjoy connecting the moms of Knoxville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Nashville.
